Essa is a lower tier municipality within the upper tier municipality of Simcoe County. It is bounded by County Road 90 to its north, County Road 27 to its east, Ontario Highway 89 and County Road 15 to its south. The Township is approximately 100 kilometres north of Toronto.
Essa was named after a Native American Chief's daughter, and is older than Canada itself. Essa was originally pioneered by 3 families (George Dinwoody, Thomas Duff, and Samuel McClain) who lived together in a log shanty. The log shanty was utilized for religious services, school and Council. The Township of Essa was comprised of 6 communities during this time (early 1862).
Essa held its first council meeting on January 21, 1850!

The Township of Essa is an urban/rural mixed Township comprised of the three major communities of Angus, Thornton and Baxter, with Canada's largest Canadian Forces training base, Base Borden, within its boundaries. Essa also includes the smaller hamlets of Colwell, Egbert, Ivy and Utopia and is approximately 20 minutes east of Barrie and approximately 1 hour north of Toronto.
